Dear Mom

The day you called me with the news that we had always expected but were never ready for, the ground shifted beneath my feet. That horrible C word that had been through the women in our family for years had finally made it's way to you.
You always say you don't see yourself as a cancer survivor. And maybe because you're not. Cancer didn't survive you, you absolute badass.
Getting to do this shoot with you, now two years later, was one of the highlights of my career as a photographer, my life as a daughter, and my journey as a woman. And that while you may not see yourself as having done something extraordinary, you have.
This shoot wasn't just meant to be something pretty - it's an inspiration to all women who have been and may be facing this same battle. To come out the other side, no less a woman, and evermore an icon.
Mommy, you are an inspiration. And while I aspire to be cool, I know I'll never be chilling-in-an-antique-chair-topless-smoking-a-cigarette-and-drinking-wine-in-a-field-of-wildflowers cool. But, hey, goals.
All my love
Gemma
